Chinese and Japanese researchers reported on the 9th that during their research on lithium-air batteries, they accidentally discovered an effective new method of carbon dioxide fixation, which provided new ideas and means for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.
The study was led by Zhou Haoshen, a principal researcher at the National Institute of Industrial Technology in Japan and a professor at the University of Tsukuba in Japan and Nanjing University in China. The paper was published in the new issue of the American Cell Press, Joule magazine.
As global warming has received widespread attention from the entire society, how to convert and fix carbon dioxide, which is the number one greenhouse gas, has gradually become the focus of scientific research. The usual idea of ​​carbon sequestration is to catalytically reduce carbon dioxide to gaseous or liquid fuels such as carbon monoxide, methane, and methanol and use them again.
According to Zhou Haoshen, conventional carbon sequestration requires elaborate and complex catalysts to promote chemical reactions, and there are challenges in terms of conversion efficiency and stability. While they fix carbon dioxide through the electrochemical reaction process of lithium-carbon dioxide batteries, whether they are products such as solid carbon and lithium carbonate produced by discharge, or residual carbon components when charging, they are very easy to collect and use.
Zhou Haoshen team has long been engaged in energy storage and conversion research. They found that lithium-carbon dioxide batteries generate carbon and lithium carbonate during discharge. When charging, both products can be oxidized under the action of a ruthenium catalyst, and carbon dioxide is released at the same time. However, by using other suitable catalysts, the lithium carbonate can be selectively electrochemically oxidized and decomposed during the battery charging process, while another discharge product carbon remains in the battery.
Research shows that this method not only provides an efficient carbon sequestration technology, but also a high specific energy supply system, which is expected to be applied in the future in the preparation of functional carbon materials, indoor air quality purification, household electrical energy storage, and industrial exhaust gas treatment. .
