Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Germany, recently announced the development of a super battery that can double electric vehicle life to 1,000 kilometers without increasing its size.
According to Mareike Wolter, the battery project manager, the biggest technological breakthrough of this new type of battery is to change the internal electrode shape of the battery.
Mareike Wolter said that for electric cars like Tesla, the interior of the battery panel is connected by a large number of cylindrical 18650 lithium batteries. This design will result in a huge space waste, and the new battery design of Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is to Eliminate this waste of space.
The interior of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft's battery is of a thin plate design. Each layer of metal is coated with ceramic powder, polymer, and energy storage material, with one anode and one cathode. When multiple layers of this structure are stacked together, it becomes a more encrypted brick.
Mareike Wolter emphasized that because of the space wasted between the traditional cylindrical battery cells, the thin-film battery can have a larger energy density in the same volume and can even double the capacity.
Taking the Tesla Model S as an example, the current battery life is 540km, and after using thin-film batteries, it is expected to achieve more than 1000km of battery life.
According to plan, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft will use the thin-film battery for actual testing by 2020, but it will finally be able to reach volume production, depending on cost control.
