New Technology Increases Photovoltaic Efficiency of Solar Cells by 80%

Researchers at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the United States have used new technologies to increase the conversion efficiency of a solar cell with poorer photovoltaic efficiency from 1.8% to 3.2%, an increase of 80%.

The research team led by Jun Xu has created a solar cell platform based on three-dimensional nano cones that solves the problem of the transfer of charge generated by solar photons. Due to defects in battery materials, negative electrons and positive holes are trapped and the conversion efficiency is reduced. New technologies can improve charge collection efficiency. Using the same material, the conversion efficiency of the new nano-cone-structured solar cells is 80% higher than that of conventional structures.
