The ground effect wing aircraft is a bit like being between an airplane and a ship. It uses forward speed to generate lift, while creating an air cushion under a relatively short and thick wing. This allows them to fly on water, moving much faster than ships, but using less fuel than traditional aircraft.
This new ground effect wing aircraft was built by engineers at Peter the Great University of Technology in St. Petersburg and led by researcher Alexei Maistro. It is called "Storm-600" (Storm-600). It is designed to operate autonomously, giving up on-board drivers, using GPS-based navigation, traditional radio-wave-based radar, and LiDAR (light detection and ranging) systems to enable it to detect and avoid obstacles.
The battery power of its electric motor is provided by the photovoltaic panel array on the top, which may enable the aircraft to be deployed for a long time without returning to the base to refuel. Its current theoretical maximum speed is 200 km/h (124 mph), but its designers hope to increase this number to 300 km/h (186 mph).
The researchers plan to test the "Storm-600" on the Neva River in St. Petersburg later this summer. It can eventually be used in patrols, search and rescue or cargo transportation operations. In addition, it may be used as a mobile charging platform for air and underwater drones.
