Shanghai Optical Machinery Co., Ltd. made progress in the research of silicate all-solid photonic crystal fiber

The High-power Laser Cell Technology R&D Center of the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences uses its own 1.2% by weight neodymium-doped N0312-type high-quality silicate glass and other commercial undoped silicate glasses through theoretical design. In the simulation, a single-mode laser output silicate all-solid-state photonic crystal fiber with a core diameter of 45 micrometers was successfully fabricated by a combination of a tube rod method and a stacking method, and a wavelength of 1064 nm was achieved using a 97 cm-long optical fiber. W's single-mode laser output was published in Scientific Reports [Scientific Reports 5, 12547 (2015)].

At present, the internationally mainstream large-mode photonic crystal fibers are concentrated in the research of silica air-hole optical fibers. Compared with quartz glass, silicate glasses have the characteristics of low melting point, high doping concentration of rare earth ions, and good homogeneity, making them relatively useful. Short fiber can achieve laser output. At the same time, the all-solid-state structure in this study is more conducive to the welding of optical fibers, avoiding air hole structure pollution.
