An international cooperation team composed of academician Mao Heguang of Beijing High-pressure Scientific Research Center and professor Yao Yansun of the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, discovered for the first time a polynitrogen with a folded honeycomb layered structure under the extreme conditions of 1.5 million atmospheric pressure and 2200K (Polymerized nitrogen). The result was published in "Science Progress" a few days ago, and was selected as one of the four "selected papers" in the current period.
The researchers used laser-heated diamond counter anvil technology to produce ultra-high pressure and high temperature conditions. The crystal structure of the polymer nitrogen in the pleated layer was confirmed by ultra-high pressure in-situ single crystal X-ray diffraction in a high-energy synchrotron radiation source, combined with micro-region Raman spectroscopy measurement and theoretical calculations.
The study found that the crystal structure and optical properties of the pleated layer of nitrogen with the evolution of pressure and the abnormal spectral characteristics are in line with the anisotropy of the crystal structure. Through theoretical calculations, the researchers explained the inherent reasons that the pleated layer of nitrogen has been difficult to synthesize for a long time. However, during the depressurization process, the pleated polymer nitrogen is converted back to nitrogen. How to obtain pleated polymer nitrogen under normal pressure still needs further study.
The discovery of pleated polymer nitrogen laid the foundation for the further development of pure nitrogen two-dimensional materials and high energy density polymer nitrogen.
The crystal structure of the pleated layer of nitrogen and black phosphorus is consistent.
