When the lithium battery is charged, lithium ions migrate from the positive electrode to the graphite on the negative electrode. When they are discharged, the lithium ions return to the positive electrode from the graphite.
However, in the face of strong lithium ions, graphite is not a good choice, it limits the maximum capacity of lithium ions, while also reducing the power of lithium batteries. Now professors at the Beibei Institute of Technology recommend using spider silk instead of graphite to significantly improve battery capacity and operation.
Researchers are very sensitive to the strength and flexibility of spider silk and have also considered using it in electronic devices. For example, a spider silk coated with carbon nanotubes can be three times more conductive than normal spider silk.
In New York, researchers have invented a process that uses chemical processing of spider silk, a process that can turn spider silk into a nitrogen-permeable molecular film about 15 to 30 nanometers thick. The electron rich nitrogen molecules enhance the conductivity and allow the material to create more space for lithium ions.
They have now added this new material to the prototype battery and said that once the material is not a problem, the simple matter of boosting the battery level can be achieved in one step. In the new material, the stock of lithium can exceed 5 times the content of lithium in graphite, and this new battery is very stable. After experiencing 10,000 charge and discharge cycles, only 9% of the battery is lost.
