The world's first 3D printing car is pre-sold next year: starting at $53,000

On the morning of November 6, Beijing time, a car company called Local Motors just launched the world's first mass-produced 3D printing car - LM3D Swim. This car does not replace the driver's status like a driverless car, but can be customized to the driver's own needs.

In fact, this car is a model of Local Motors' LM3D series car. It was conceptual design in July this year, and a complete prototype was developed in September this year. The shape of this product is like a fusion of Mini Cooper and ATV, and promises that each car is unique.

Although the underlying technology of each car in this series remains the same, Local Motors says customers can customize a variety of exterior elements through 3D printing. In short, all LM3D Swim internal configurations are the same, but the external design is different.

The LM3D Swim's existing prototype uses the same powertrain as the BMW i3, and the final production car may continue to use this configuration. But unlike the i3, the LM3D Swim has only an electric version, because the petrol version and other corresponding accessories will greatly increase the difficulty of 3D printing.

3D not only enhances the car's customization, but also allows the car to absorb energy better in the event of a collision, thus enhancing safety. 3D printing also reduces waste of raw materials, and the materials used in this process can even be recycled.

The LM3D Swim will be pre-sold from early next year and is currently undergoing crash and highway certifications in the United States. The first car is expected to be officially launched at the company's plant in Knoxville, Tennessee, in early 2017. It is expected to produce 2,400 units a year, each selling for at least $53,000, depending on customization options.
